Then call each of the references and question them in detail. Did the house cost what the builder said? Did he finish the project in a reasonable amount of time? If there were warranty issues after construction were they handled in a competent and professional manner?

Following these simple steps can spare you much grief. If there's bad news out there you'll want to learn it before you make the committment to any home builder.
